About us

Aims of SASLI

Our aim is to foster and enhance British Sign Language/English interpreting services in Scotland. We maintain a register of Interpreters and encourage the training of those wishing to develop interpreting skills, thereby improving communication between Deaf and hearing people as equally participating members of the community.

Governance

SASLI is governed by a Board of Trustees, who are our Company Directors. At least six of these positions must be occupied by interpreter members and one position occupied by an Affiliate member. The remaining four members may come from any sphere of professional life and at least one Director must be a representative from the Deaf community.

Campaign and Chartermark

Background

The Scottish Association of Sign Language Interpreters (SASLI) and the Scottish Council on Deafness (SCoD) are conducting a campaign aimed at Local Authorities, public services and the NHS to raise awareness of their responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) with regard to providing linguistic access to Deaf people who use BSL as their first language.

Campaign aims

• To raise awareness of the importance of using registered BSL Interpreters and Interpreting agencies in the public sector.

• To establish the SASLI Chartermark as the accepted quality assurance standard throughout Scotland.

SASLI has created a Chartermark for all Registered and Trainee Interpreters as well as for Registered agencies. We are working with the NHS, the union UNITE and local authorities to raise awareness of the Chartermark.

The Deaf community

Deaf people have a central role to play in the development of BSL/English interpreting.  We intend to engage with the Deaf community by visiting local clubs, forums and groups.  This will give us the opportunity to raise awareness about SASLI and learn about some of the key issues relating to Deaf people. Topics may include:

  • Raising awareness about SASLI and working with BSL/English interpreters;
  • Identifying local priorities;
  • Providing information relating to SASLI’s Complaints Procedure;
  • Seeking ways of increasing involvement in SASLI’s policy consultations.

This two-way exchange of information is central in developing the partnership between Deaf people and interpreters.

If you would like to invite SASLI to have an open meeting at your club, forum or group, please contact the Director.
